6 September, 2011 - National Museum, Prague

Prague and the National Museum

We had a short trip to Prague today. Josef needed to conduct some business. We headed in early in the morning and arrived in Prague sometime during the late morning hours. We finished the business portion of the journey and had lunch. After that we headed to the National Museum.

The old building is at the high end of Wenceslas Square with a set of stairs to climb to reach the main entrance. The old building is closed during the day, but it does host concerts in the evening. The new National Museum is directly across the street. It's all shiny and contemporary looking. When we went, we were informed that there were only two exhibits; one about butterflies, and one about antibiotics. The end of the month would have new exhibits about machinery and other sorts of things. We decided to see what the world of butterflies was like.

The butterfly exhibit was a collection of panels with pictures, videos and specimens. Each was numbered and in Czech. Luckily, each panel also had corresponding laminates of English translations. They had butterflies from all over the world; some of them were outrageous colors. They went through the use of camouflage, warning colors, mimicry, silk worms, migration, smallest to largest, and many other things. There was a video playing which depicted the typical live of a variety of butterflies.

All in all, it was a beautiful exhibition. Through the exit door, there was a play area for children and Josef and I took the time to play a little with the props there.

The antibiotic exhibit left a lot to be wanted for me, but then I have a generous scientific background and the exhibit merely scratched the surface of my knowledge. It was set up as a timeline throughout history. My reaction was – meh.
